Organic farming can reverse climate change. ***** Agricultura ecologica puede revertir el cambio climático

The issue of climate change brought many people out onto the streets all over the world last weekend. Our local gathering was in Vera. Thank you to Thomas for organising this event.

La cuestión del cambio climático sacó mucha gente a las calles en todo el mundo este fin de semana. Nuestra reunión local era en Vera. Gracias a Thomas por la organización de este evento.

We have been asking governments to focus on renewable energy, which is very important. But there has been less focus on the important role which organic farming can play so here are a few points to consider.

Les hemos pedido los gobiernos centrarse en las energías renovables, que es muy importante. Pero ha habido menos atención sobre el importante papel que la agricultura orgánica puede así que aquí están algunos puntos a considerar.

Industrial agriculture releases carbon into the atmosphere every time a field is turned over. The chemicals which are added to the ground then kill the life in the soil. The manufacturing process of the nitrogen which is used as a fertiliser also adds to the carbon emittted into the atmosphere. Cultivation and harvest rely on big fuel burning machinery.

Agricultura industrial libera carbono a la atmósfera cada vez que un campo se da la vuelta. Los productos químicos que se agregan al suelo entonces mata a la vida en el suelo. El proceso de fabricación del nitrógeno que se utiliza como fertilizante también agrega a la emittted de carbono a la atmósfera. Cultivo y cosecha dependen de la gran maquinaria de combustión.

Organic farming relies upon nurturing the life in the soil which in turn absorbs carbon from the atmosphere. There is no requirement for nitrogen fertiliser, as organic materials are recycled back into the ground. And as organic farming is often on a much smaller scale, with a lot of work done by hand, there are fewer carbon emissions from fuel-burning machinery.

Agricultura ecologica se basa en cultivar la vida en la tierra que a su vez absorbe carbono de la atmósfera. No hay ningún requisito para fertilizantes de nitrógeno, como se reciclan los materiales orgánicos en el suelo. Y como agricultura ecologica es a menudo en una escala mucho menor, con un montón de trabajo hecho a mano, hay menos emisiones de carbono de combustión de la maquinaria.

Contrary to popular belief we do not need industrial scale agriculture to feed the world. Family farms provide 80% of the world's food.

By supporting organic farming we are doing much more than looking after our own health and wellbeing. We are becoming part of the solution to many of the problems which beset the world today, including climate change.
